Welding Efficiency with Column & Boom Systems
How column & boom systems automate linear and circular welding, and where fixed, moving and telescopic boom models are used.
A column & boom is a welding manipulator that positions the torch precisely on a vertical column and a horizontal boom. Used with a rotator or positioner, it completes linear and circular seams automatically.
Types of column & boom
- Fixed boom: Reaches the workpiece from the outside, can be installed close to a wall and welds linearly with its travel movement.
- Moving boom: Reaches the part from both inside and outside and welds linearly with boom movement.
- Telescopic boom: Takes up less space when retracted, an advantage in tight areas.
How it improves efficiency
- The torch travels at a constant speed, so weld quality is repeatable.
- Operator fatigue drops and long seams are completed in one go.
- Submerged arc, MIG/MAG and cutting units can be connected to the same system.
Installation points
The workpiece diameter and length determine the column height and boom length needed. A 360° rotating column lets you work with several stations.
